What a Sawmill Does
A sawmill takes harvested logs and processes them into dimensional lumber and other wood products. The core activity is sawing: cutting the log lengthwise into boards of desired thickness, width, and length while trying to maximize usable wood and minimize waste.

Basic Sawmill Process

Types of Sawmills
Portable Sawmills
Trailer-mounted or mobile band and circular mills that can be taken to the log source. Popular with landowners, small producers, and custom cutters.
Stationary / Industrial Mills
Fixed facilities with high-capacity headrigs, automated handling, scanners, and optimized cutting systems for volume production.
Band Sawmills
Use a continuous steel band blade. Generally produce less sawdust (thinner kerf) and are common in both portable and industrial settings.
Circular Sawmills
Use large circular blades. Historically dominant and still used, especially in certain portable and specialized applications.
Important Concepts
Kerf
The width of wood removed by the saw blade. Thinner kerf means less waste and more usable lumber.
Cant
A log that has been squared or partially sawn on one or more sides, ready for further breakdown.
Grade & Yield
Lumber is graded for quality. Good sawing patterns and log selection improve both volume yield and grade recovery.
Seasoning
Fresh-sawn (“green”) lumber contains high moisture. Air drying or kiln drying stabilizes it for use.
