What a Creation Account Is
A cosmogony is an account of how the ordered world came to be. Almost every culture that left records left one, and they are strikingly unalike in their particulars — a god speaks, a giant is dismembered, a bird dives for mud, an egg cracks, a world is sung into shape. What they share is a question rather than an answer.
It is worth being careful about what these texts were for. Reading them as failed physics — primitive attempts at what geology later did properly — misses most of what is in them, and it is not how the traditions that preserved them have generally read them either. A creation account typically does several jobs at once: it says what kind of thing the world is, what human beings are and are for, why the social order looks as it does, and which day of the week is holy. Whether it also intends to say how long it took is a question the traditions themselves have answered in different ways, and it is exactly where the modern argument sits.
Scholars use it as a technical term for a traditional sacred narrative, carrying no judgement about truth. In ordinary speech it means something false. This page mostly says “account” or “narrative” instead, because the technical sense reliably fails to survive contact with the everyday one — and because no tradition on this page describes its own account as a myth.
Accounts Across Cultures
A necessarily brief sampling. Each of these exists in multiple versions and has a long interpretive tradition behind it; what follows is the outline most often summarised, not the whole of any of them.
Enuma Elish
The gods emerge from the mingling of fresh and salt water. Marduk kills the sea-goddess Tiamat in combat and splits her body to make sky and earth; humankind is fashioned from the blood of a defeated god, to carry the labour the gods no longer wish to do. Order is won by violence, and people exist to serve.
The Mound and the Word
Several accounts coexisted without anyone apparently minding. At Heliopolis, Atum rises on the first mound out of Nun, the primordial water, and brings forth the first pair. In the Memphite version, Ptah creates by conceiving in the heart and speaking with the tongue — creation by thought and word, some two millennia before Genesis was written.
Genesis
One God, unopposed, orders a formless deep by speaking. No battle, no rival powers, no divine genealogy. Sun and moon are not named — they are “the greater light” and “the lesser light”, fixtures rather than deities. Humankind is made in the divine image and given responsibility rather than drudgery.
Hesiod's Theogony
First Chaos, then Earth, then Eros. The world comes about through successive generations of gods who overthrow their parents — Ouranos by Kronos, Kronos by Zeus. It is less a creation than a genealogy of power, and the philosophers who followed spent centuries trying to replace it with something less like a family quarrel.
The Rig Veda
Several accounts again. The Purusha Sukta has a cosmic person sacrificed and divided, his parts becoming the world and the orders of society. The Nasadiya Sukta does something rarer: it describes the beginning and then declines to be certain, ending by asking who could possibly know — perhaps not even the highest god, who came afterwards.
Pangu and Nüwa
Pangu grows for eighteen thousand years inside a cosmic egg, then separates heaven from earth and holds them apart until he dies; his body becomes the mountains, rivers and winds. Nüwa, lonely, shapes the first people from yellow earth — and, tiring, flicks mud from a cord to make the rest.
Ymir and the Gap
Before anything there is Ginnungagap, the yawning void, with fire on one side and ice on the other. From their meeting comes Ymir, the first giant, whom Odin and his brothers kill; his flesh becomes the earth, his blood the sea, his skull the sky. The world is built from a corpse, and it is destined to end.
The Popol Vuh
The K'iche' Maya account has the gods try repeatedly. Creatures of mud dissolve; creatures of wood have no minds and do not remember their makers, so they are destroyed. Only people made of maize can speak, think and give thanks — a creation story in which the makers learn by failing.
Obatala's Descent
In Yoruba tradition the supreme being Olodumare sends Obatala down on a chain to a world of water, with a snail shell of sand, a hen and a palm nut. The sand poured out and scratched about by the hen becomes dry land; the palm nut becomes the forest. Creation as a commissioned expedition.
Sky Woman
In Haudenosaunee and related accounts, a woman falls from the sky world onto a water world. Birds break her fall; a turtle offers its back; animals dive in turn for mud from the bottom, and the one that succeeds — often the least likely — brings up enough earth to spread on the shell. The continent is Turtle Island.
Izanagi and Izanami
In the Kojiki, a divine pair stand on the floating bridge of heaven and stir the brine below with a jewelled spear. The drops that fall from its tip form the first island, and from there the archipelago and its gods. The account continues into death, grief and a failed journey to retrieve the dead.
The Dreaming
A single English word covers the traditions of hundreds of distinct Aboriginal language groups, and it fits none of them exactly. Broadly, ancestral beings travelled a featureless land, and their actions made its rivers, rocks and living things — a creation that is also a map, and that continues rather than being finished. Much of this knowledge is held by particular custodians and is not public.
Patterns That Recur
Accounts from cultures with no contact keep arriving at similar shapes. Why is genuinely disputed — shared inheritance from very old traditions, borrowing along trade routes, common features of the human situation, or simply that there are not many ways to tell this kind of story. The patterns are worth knowing whichever explanation is right.
A formless deep, dark and undifferentiated, precedes the world in Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Hebrew, Polynesian and many other accounts. Creation is usually the ordering of it rather than the making of it out of nothing.
Sky is parted from earth, light from dark, water from land. The first creative act is very often a division, and the resulting world is defined by its boundaries.
The whole world compressed into a seed that opens — Chinese, Orphic Greek, Finnish, Indian. Everything that will exist is already present, folded up.
Ymir, Purusha, Pangu, Tiamat. A primordial being is killed or sacrificed and the world is made from the body, so that the landscape is quite literally somebody.
An animal plunges into the primordial water and returns with a little mud, from which the land grows. Found across Siberia and North America, which is part of why anthropologists take the distribution seriously.
The world comes about because it is named or commanded. Egyptian Memphite theology, Genesis, and the opening of John's Gospel all place the word at the beginning — the world as something said rather than something built.
Humanity shaped from clay or earth by hand — Egyptian Khnum at his wheel, Nüwa's yellow soil, the maize of the Popol Vuh, the dust of Genesis 2. The maker as craftsman rather than commander.
Gods who try, fail, and try again. The Popol Vuh's mud and wooden people, the Aztec succession of suns, the flood traditions that reset a world gone wrong. Creation as a process with revisions.
Creation from absolutely nothing is far less common than people assume, and it is not obviously what most ancient accounts describe. In the Christian tradition it was worked out over the first few centuries, partly to rule out the idea of matter existing alongside God.
Genesis: Two Accounts, Not One
The opening chapters contain two creation narratives that differ in order, vocabulary and tone. Both Jewish and Christian readers noticed this long before modern scholarship existed, and the tradition has offered several ways of reading them together. Noticing the difference is not a modern attack on the text; it is one of the first things careful readers of it have always done.

The first account is not a list. Days one to three separate and shape three empty domains; days four to six fill those same three domains in the same order. Light on day one is populated by luminaries on day four; sky and sea on day two by birds and fish on day five; dry land on day three by animals and humans on day six. Whether that structure is a literary frame around a sequence of ordinary days, or a frame that was never meant to carry a sequence at all, is one of the oldest live questions in reading the chapter — and it is doing a great deal of work in the modern argument.
Six Words That Carry the Argument
A surprising amount of the disagreement turns on how a handful of Hebrew words are rendered. None of these translations is obviously wrong; they are choices, and each one closes some readings and opens others.
Used in the Hebrew Bible only with God as its subject, and never with the material stated. That is suggestive but not decisive: it tells us the act is God's alone, not that it was performed on nothing.
Usually “formless and void”. The phrase suggests trackless waste rather than sheer nothingness — a rhyming pair with a sound close to nonsense in Hebrew too. Robert Alter renders it “welter and waste”.
Spirit, breath or wind, all at once, and the choice between them changes the opening scene entirely: the Spirit of God hovering, or a mighty wind sweeping over the water. Translations split on it.
Elsewhere in the Bible it means a daylight period, a 24-hour day, or an indefinite era — including in Genesis 2:4, “in the day that the LORD God made earth and heaven”. The range is why the day-age reading is possible; the “evening and morning” refrain is why it is contested.
Human and ground, the same root. The pun is the point: the creature is an earthling taken from the earth, and returns to it. English can only get partway there — perhaps “human from the humus”.
The very first word, and grammatically ambiguous. “In the beginning God created” treats it as absolute; “When God began to create” treats it as a dependent clause, making verse 1 the opening of a longer sentence. Rashi argued for the second in the eleventh century, and several modern Jewish translations follow him.
Genesis Among Its Neighbours
Genesis was written in a world already full of creation accounts, and it shares a great deal with them: a watery beginning, a separation of the waters, humankind formed from earth, a rest at the end. What makes it interesting is less what it borrows than where it pointedly refuses to go along.
In Enuma Elish the world is made from a slain enemy after a war among gods. In Genesis 1 there is no opponent at all. The deep is not a monster to be defeated; it is simply there, and it is organised. Elsewhere in the Hebrew Bible the older combat imagery does surface — Leviathan, Rahab, the sea rebuked — which makes its absence here look deliberate.
Sun and moon were major deities across the ancient Near East. Genesis 1 declines to name them, calling them the greater and lesser lights and assigning them a job: marking time. For an audience that knew Shamash and Sin by name, that is a pointed piece of writing.
In Atrahasis and Enuma Elish, people are made because the gods are tired of digging canals. In Genesis, humankind bears the divine image and is given responsibility for the rest. The same raw material — clay, blood, breath — is put to an entirely different purpose.
In Egypt and Mesopotamia, the one who bore the god's image was the king. Genesis applies it to humanity as such, male and female. Whatever else the phrase means, its distribution is startling in context.
Most academic biblical scholarship attributes the first account and the second to different sources — conventionally called Priestly and Yahwistic — combined by later editors, which would explain the differences in name, vocabulary and order. The broad picture is widely held; the classical four-source model in its detail is much argued over, and some scholars have moved well away from it. Many religious readers accept the analysis and read the combined text as scripture regardless; others reject the analysis. It is worth knowing that the question of how the text came together and the question of what authority it carries are separable, and are separated by a great many people.
How Genesis Has Been Read
Reading the six days as six ordinary days is one option among several, and it is not the only one the tradition has taken.
Philo of Alexandria
A Jewish philosopher reading Genesis alongside Plato argues that the six days are not a measure of time. God, he says, did not need days, and the number six is there for its mathematical fitness. Allegorical reading of the chapter is as old as our earliest substantial commentary on it.
Origen
Asks the obvious question and presses it: what could an evening and a morning mean on the first three days, when the sun is not made until the fourth? He takes the difficulty as a signal that the text intends something other than a plain chronicle.
Augustine
Spends years on The Literal Meaning of Genesis and concludes that the days are not ordinary days — that creation was in some sense instantaneous, with the six-day arrangement accommodating the account to human understanding. He also warns Christians against pronouncing confidently on the natural world in ways that make them look ridiculous to those who actually know it, on the grounds that it discredits everything else they say. That passage has been quoted at every stage of this argument since.
Rashi, Maimonides, Aquinas
Rashi argues the opening verse is grammatically a dependent clause and that the chapter is not teaching the order of creation. Maimonides holds that scripture must be read figuratively wherever a literal sense would contradict demonstrated truth. Aquinas reports the differing patristic views on the days without insisting on one, and treats creation as a question about dependence on God rather than about a moment in time.
The Reformers
Luther pushes back hard on allegory and reads the days as days. Calvin reads them as days too, but adds that Moses wrote in the ordinary language of ordinary people rather than as an astronomer — an argument later used to make room for scientific findings the text does not address.
Ussher's Chronology
Archbishop James Ussher adds up the genealogies and arrives at a creation date of 4004 BC. It was careful work by the standards of its day and one of several such calculations. Printed in the margins of English Bibles for generations, it acquired an authority it was never given by anyone.
Deep Time Arrives
Geology establishes that the Earth is vastly old, and it does so largely through the work of devout men who saw no conflict. Most conservative Protestant theologians of the century accommodated an old Earth without much difficulty — the gap and day-age readings both belong to this period, not to a later retreat.
Framework and Function
Two influential readings hold that the chapter was never making the kind of claim the argument assumes. The framework view takes the two triads as a literary structure rather than a timetable. The functional view, associated with John Walton, argues that ancient accounts of creation are about assigning roles and purposes rather than manufacturing material — that the chapter describes a temple being commissioned rather than matter being made.
The Modern Positions
“Creationism” is not one view. The people grouped under it disagree with each other sharply — often more sharply than they disagree with the scientific mainstream — and treating them as a bloc guarantees misunderstanding everybody. What follows is each position in its own terms.

The Catholic Church has permitted Catholics to accept the evolution of the human body since Humani Generis in 1950, and John Paul II described evolution in 1996 as more than a hypothesis. Most mainline Protestant denominations, the major Jewish movements and many others take similar positions. Young-earth creationism is a significant movement, concentrated in particular traditions and particular countries, rather than the general religious view.
Four questions get bundled and are worth separating: how old is the Earth; are living things descended from common ancestors; is design detectable by scientific means; and what kind of claim is Genesis 1 making. A person can answer these independently, and the positions above are different combinations of those answers. Most unproductive arguments are two people disagreeing about different questions.
How the Modern Argument Developed
The dispute in its current form is much younger than most people assume, and its shape has been set largely in American courtrooms.
Paley's Watch
William Paley argues that finding a watch on a heath implies a watchmaker, and that living things imply the same. It is the design argument in the form later writers answer, and Darwin read it admiringly as a student.
The Fundamentals
Twelve volumes of essays defining conservative Protestant belief, and the origin of the word “fundamentalist”. Notably, several contributors accepted an old Earth and some form of evolution — the movement's early boundaries were not where they later ended up.
The Scopes Trial
A Tennessee teacher is tried for teaching evolution in a case deliberately arranged as a test. Scopes is convicted and fined $100; the conviction is later set aside on a technicality, leaving the law itself intact. The trial's real effect was on public perception rather than on the statute, and both sides have claimed it since.
The Genesis Flood
John Whitcomb and Henry Morris publish the book that creates modern young-earth creationism, reviving flood geology from an earlier Seventh-day Adventist tradition. This is the pivotal date on this timeline: the young-earth position as a mass movement dates from 1961, not from antiquity.
Three Rulings
Epperson strikes down bans on teaching evolution. McLean strikes down Arkansas's “balanced treatment” law, with a judgment that sets out what makes something science. Edwards v. Aguillard takes the question to the Supreme Court, which holds that requiring creation science alongside evolution serves a religious purpose and is unconstitutional.
Intelligent Design
Phillip Johnson's Darwin on Trial and Michael Behe's Darwin's Black Box frame a new argument: that certain biological systems are irreducibly complex, and that design is detectable empirically without identifying the designer. Its advocates present it as science; its critics, and later a federal court, disagreed.
Kitzmiller v. Dover
A Pennsylvania school board requires a statement about intelligent design in biology classes. After a six-week trial, Judge John E. Jones III — a Republican appointee — rules that ID is not science and that the policy violates the Establishment Clause. Drafts of the textbook Of Pandas and People were shown in evidence to have had “creationism” replaced with “intelligent design” after the Edwards decision, leaving one bungled edit reading “cdesign proponentsists”. The school board was not appealed against because it had already been voted out.
Two Institutions
Francis Collins, the geneticist who led the Human Genome Project, founds BioLogos to argue for evolutionary creation from within evangelical Christianity. Meanwhile Answers in Genesis opens the Creation Museum and then the Ark Encounter, presenting the young-earth case at considerable scale. The movement's two directions are both institutionalising.
Still Being Introduced
A bill to permit intelligent design in North Dakota science classes fails narrowly in the state Senate in February. Similar bills continue to appear in several legislatures most years. None has yet survived a constitutional challenge, and the courts have not revisited the question at the Supreme Court level since 1987.
Persistent Misunderstandings
These circulate on all sides of the argument, and several of them are held with confidence by people who would be embarrassed to find out where they came from.
It covers views that contradict each other flatly. A young-earth creationist and an old-earth creationist disagree about the age of the world by a factor of nearly a million. Arguing against “creationism” in general usually means arguing against a position nobody in the room actually holds.
The largest Christian body in the world has permitted acceptance of evolution since 1950, and in the most recent Gallup figures more Americans hold God-guided evolution than hold strict creationism. A great many working biologists are religious. The correlation exists, but it is far weaker than the argument's volume suggests.
Philo, Origen and Augustine all argued against reading the six days as ordinary days, long before there was any scientific reason to want to. Non-literal readings are not a modern retreat under pressure; they are older than most of the doctrines that are read literally.
A young Earth was widely assumed before geology, because nothing suggested otherwise. But young-earth creationism as an organised movement with flood geology and a case against the scientific mainstream dates from 1961. Most conservative theologians of the nineteenth century had already accommodated an old Earth.
It may be compatible with it, but the chapter opens with a deep already present and is grammatically ambiguous in its first word. Creation from nothing was worked out over the early centuries of Christian thought as a theological conclusion, drawing on more than this chapter. Many who hold the doctrine firmly do not claim it is simply read off Genesis 1.
Scopes lost. The law he broke stayed on the books in Tennessee until 1967, and bans on teaching evolution were not struck down until Epperson in 1968. The trial's reputation as a decisive victory comes largely from the play and film Inherit the Wind, which is a drama about the McCarthy era and not a documentary.
The people who composed and transmitted them were not attempting a research programme and would not have recognised the description. Reading a text as a bad answer to a question it never asked tells you very little about the text, and the same error is made by its defenders and its critics alike.
Science has established things that contradict specific empirical claims — a 6,000-year-old Earth, a global flood, separately created species. It does not address whether there is a God or whether the universe depends on one, because those are not questions its methods reach. Some scientists think the evidence bears on them anyway; that is a philosophical argument, and it should be labelled as one.
Where the Two Kinds of Question Meet
Science works by methodological naturalism: it looks for explanations in terms of natural causes, because those are the ones its methods can test. That is a working rule about procedure, not a finding about what exists. It is why a scientist can be religious without inconsistency, and why “science assumes there is no God” misstates what the rule is doing.
It also explains why intelligent design has had the reception it has. The claim that design is empirically detectable is a claim that this rule can be relaxed while remaining scientific. Its advocates argue it can; the great majority of scientists, and the court in Kitzmiller, concluded it cannot. That is a dispute about what counts as science, which is a philosophical question and not one settled by any experiment.
Meanwhile some claims genuinely do overlap and can be tested. The age of the Earth, whether all land was ever simultaneously submerged, whether species share ancestry — these are empirical, and the evidence on them is not close. Others do not overlap at all: whether the universe exists for a reason, whether it depends on something beyond itself, what human beings are for. Sorting a given claim into the right category before arguing about it would prevent a large fraction of this dispute.
