What Do We Mean by “Aliens”?

In scientific discussion, “aliens” or extraterrestrial life refers to any form of life that did not originate on Earth. This ranges from simple microbial life to complex or intelligent organisms. The term does not automatically imply advanced civilizations or visitation of Earth.

Popular culture often conflates three separate ideas: (1) the existence of any life beyond Earth, (2) intelligent extraterrestrial civilizations, and (3) claims of UFOs/UAPs as evidence of visitation. Science treats these as distinct questions with different standards of evidence.

The Scientific Search for Life

Astrobiology

The interdisciplinary field that studies the origin, evolution, distribution, and future of life in the universe. It draws on astronomy, biology, chemistry, geology, and planetary science.

SETI

Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. Efforts (radio, optical, and other methods) to detect signals or artifacts that would indicate technological civilizations.

Exoplanets

Biosignatures

Where Might Life Exist?

In Our Solar System

Mars (past or present subsurface water and chemistry), Europa and Enceladus (subsurface oceans), Titan (organic chemistry and liquid hydrocarbons), and possibly other icy moons are the main targets. No confirmed life has been found.

Around Other Stars

Rocky planets in the habitable zone of their stars are of greatest interest. “Earth-like” does not guarantee life, but it increases the probability that liquid water and suitable chemistry could exist. Atmospheric characterization is the next major step.

Extreme Environments on Earth

Extremophiles (organisms living in extreme heat, cold, acidity, radiation, or pressure) show that life can adapt to harsh conditions. This expands the range of environments considered potentially habitable elsewhere.

The Fermi Paradox

Named after physicist Enrico Fermi, the paradox notes the apparent contradiction between the high probability estimates for the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations and the lack of evidence for, or contact with, such civilizations.

Common proposed explanations include: life (or intelligence) is extremely rare; civilizations are short-lived; they deliberately avoid contact; interstellar travel is far more difficult than assumed; or we simply have not looked long or carefully enough.
